2/11/13

Whenever night came, I would go to Colonel Parson’s to talk about my brother. Colonel explained to me that Sam had been arrested for stealing cows. Even though I knew he didn’t because I was there with him. We were getting are cattle back. Then I started to get really mad because Sam couldn’t’ talk to the General. When I came back in the morning, the Colonel explained to me that the general had already left so if he wanted to catch him, he would have to hurry. After I went home to talk to Mother. We talked for a little while, we both decided that Mother would go and try getting Sam loose. Then she left out the door as watch tell I could not see her. I got ready to butcher the cattle but now that mother was gone I would have to look after the tavern. I did not find very much time to butcher the cattle because everybody came and wanted rum. When Mother got word that Colonel Putnam was not going to let Sam go, Mother and I both cried. My Mother said she could not believe how much of our family that we had lost to the war. Mother started not going to church on Sunday, whenever I went, I did not stay long. I leave early because I could not bear to think about my family in so much pain.

I was still surprised and shocked about what I witnessed with Ned and the house getting burned down. I went down to Dr. Hobart, and Dr. Hobart was giving me a huge mug of rum. As I was there we talked about Dan Star. About how someone killed him, Mother said the war was making the men go crazy. It’s hard to believe how many people are getting killed. My father has now passed away now. He died from being sick on the ship they threw him on. If one person got sick it would spread fast. The conditions on the bout were horrible on the bout. It was dirty and all you got for food was slop. Mother said that he was buried somewhere in Long Island and that we would go down there and get him a grave stone.

Father went down to go look ahead and find me but he couldn't anymore. I just kept walking and then when I saw them I told the story to the cowboys and they took off. Some more people came and asked me when my father was coming I said he was supposed to be back in an hour or so. I saw the British as they went down past my house. They were riding and shot a man on his horse. I ran and told my mother so we could help them. I had to go over to the doctor so he could help the man. I started running over there. I saw Ned’s head get sliced off and then I watched as the house burned down…

After the whole thing had happened I tried to stay away from Mr. Heron. Every time he came in to the tavern I would go and do something else. Sometimes we would get letters from Sam, Mother was going to write back but Father said no. But when another one came Mother said she was writing back to him no matter what Father said. Father was mad and stomped out of the house because he knew Mother was going to write back to him. Anyways Father was planning a usual trip to Verplanck's Point. This was the first time I would go with him. We went up there to get cattle to sell to traders so they could buy stuff for the tavern. It would take six days to finish the trip. As we were driving the cattle we could hardly hear each other. I didn't even hear the horsemen come up from behind. I tried to pole over. They came up and told us to stop. They wanted are cattle. He hit my father with his gun and knocked him down. Then they all started to leave for some reason. Until I saw that there were other people after them. They have been trying to get them all day they were cattle thieves.

Mr. Heron wanted me to take letters to Fairfield. I asked him what the letters were for. He said it was for business. But my father knew it wasn't. Father said no and when he says no he means it. I was mad that I could not go. Later I asked why I couldn’t go. Father said they were not for business they could be war letters. I was shocked that I could have been holding war letters for Mr. Heron. Two weeks later I found a reason to get away and from here and deliver that letter and take them to Fairfield. I went down to Mr. Heron and told him that I can go. He knew it was a lie and a lie is a sin I said to myself. I could tell my dad that I was going fishing. I asked my Father if I could go fishing. He said sure he would love to have some fish chowder. I grab poles and starts walking. Even though I felt bad that I was lying to my father about the fish maybe I could have enough time to get some for him when I was done. As I was walking to Fairfield I saw Betsy. She starts walking with me. She asked me why I is going to Fairfield. I said that I was dropping off a letter For Mr. Heron. Betsy said that I was lying and it was a love letter. I told her it was important that I give it to the person that I needed to give it to. Then she knew that I was talking to Him before, and she finds out that it could be a war letter against Sam and his team. So Betsy tries to take it from me. She tackles me in the front. I try to squirm away from her but she had my arms pinned down all I could do was kick. I broke away but she got me again and grabbed the letter. She runs off with it has she was opening it. I ran after her but she already opens it. Then it flings in the air as she goes off. I picked it up and it was opened and dirty.

I was talking to Betsy that’s one of my friends. Betsy told me to keep a secret. The secret was about Sam. I soar on the bible that I would not tell anyone. She told me that she got a letter from Sam. She said that he was coming home soon. I was so excited I asked when he was coming but she said it didn't say. Then Betsy had to go. Weeks had gone past and there was no sign of Sam. I Looked at Betsy for some sign that he was here but she didn't. One day in church I asked her when he was coming. She told me to just shush about it. My father told me to go out and cut some wood so I did, as I was out there he was thinking to myself. Then I heard clatter of horses I listened and looked and saw 20 horsemen. I was confused because why would they be here and they were wearing blue uniforms so that meant they were rebels. I was kind of scared. So I followed them and they stopped at the tavern. They wanted Fathers gun. He said he did not have it because his other son stole it. They did not believe him. They cut his face, I got scared and ran. As I was running I saw Sam and stole the gun back. Sam woke up and saw me. He tackled me and I told him what happened to father and about the people that was there in the tavern. So as we were going up the tavern Sam saw Father standing there, Father saw him too. Sam turned and ran the other way.

January 15, 2013

Hey! I’m Tim Meeker. I have started this blog to tell my story. I live in Redding with my Mother and Father. I have a brother named Sam. Sam is 16 and I have not seen him in a while until today. It was dark stormy and we were all about to eat dinner. Then Sam walked in and was wearing a uniform. I could not wait to talk about what he did when he was away. Father did not like his uniform Sam would not take his uniform off even when Father told him to. I don’t like it when they argue. Sometimes it can get out of hand.
