Whenever night came, I would go to Colonel Parson’s to talk
about my brother. Colonel explained to me that Sam had been arrested for
stealing cows. Even though I knew he didn’t because I was there with him. We
were getting are cattle back. Then I started to get really mad because Sam couldn’t’
talk to the General. When I came back in the morning, the Colonel explained to
me that the general had already left so if he wanted to catch him, he would
have to hurry. After I went home to talk to Mother. We talked for a little
while, we both decided that Mother would go and try getting Sam loose. Then she
left out the door as watch tell I could not see her. I got ready to butcher the
cattle but now that mother was gone I would have to look after the tavern. I
did not find very much time to butcher the cattle because everybody came and
wanted rum. When Mother got word that Colonel Putnam was not going to let Sam
go, Mother and I both cried. My Mother said she could not believe how much of
our family that we had lost to the war. Mother started not going to church on
Sunday, whenever I went, I did not stay long. I leave early because I could not bear
to think about my family in so much pain.
